J R R Tolkien (John Ronald Reul Tolkien [1892–1973]) is the author of The Hobbit (1937) and The Fellowship of the Ring (1954), The Two Towers (1954), and The Return of the King (1955). J. R. R. Tolkien also began The Silmarillion, a history of Middle Earth before the Hobbits appear, in 1917, worked on it over his life, died before completing it, and his son, Christopher, finished the novel and published it in 1977. In addition, a collection of previously unpublished material about Middle Earth and the island of Númenor was published in 1980 under the title of Unfinished Tales.

Tolkien, born in South Africa to English parents, taught at Oxford University from 1925 to 1959, specializing in medieval languages and literature, and wrote several scholarly works in this field. His fictional work, his fantasy stories, derive from medieval English, German, and Scandinavian traditions.

Tolkien creates a world called Middle Earth. It is filled with Hobbits, humans, dwarves, elves, trolls, nazgul or ringwraiths, gollums, dragons, talking trees, shape–shifters, huge spiders, murky forests, lonely mountains, and wizards.

To say that Tolkien has developed a cult following is an understatement. Tolkiens’s stories have survived very well for decades.

When Bilbo was comfortable in his home, eating multiple breakfasts and suppers, he was following his father’s side, his Bagginsish side.

When Bilbo was on an adventure with Gandalf and the dwarves, he was following his mother’s side, his Tookish side.

Tolkien reversed the usual role of mother/father. Usually, the mother is the nurturer and rears the young children at home; whereas, the father comes in to play at the time of coming of age, exposing the child, especially the male children, to an initiation of life, that involves danger.
