The long Cornish coastline was scantily protected in the 19th C allowing a great deal of smuggling goods mostly into Cornwall. This was especially true of spirits and tobacco, and other “sin” products. Not every smuggler was a twitchy little fellow, some were gentlemen who preferred to keep their riches for their pleasures without having to pay customs and excise taxes.
