Cornish Wreckers

The Cornish were mostly poor people who welcomed any bounty swept onto their beaches from a ship wrecked at sea and breaking up, spilling its cargo. It was a short step for some to arrange for such wrecks to happen. Some used false lights on shore to lure a ship onto treacherous rock or coast. The contagion appeared to be wide–spread with reports of clergy in on the action, at least when the booty showed up.
