Spirits Hauntings of Mines [Dorcas]

Polbreen Mine, near St. Agnes, is haunted by the wraith of a woman named "Dorcas" who committed suicide at the mine.

St. Ives Consols Mine also possessed a similar spirit who appeared in the shape of a woman, dressed all in black, being much muffled up at the face, appearing in the vicinity of Wheal Mary shaft. This story is told of her:

The miners had vowed to obtain 'mouth speech' with the spirit but without success.

One day, a man shouted to her: "Thee'rt a great fool to stand there frightening people like thee dost, and never answerin' nothen when they do spake to thee."

Hardly were the words out of his mouth when a sudden gust of wind blew off his hat. On turning to pick it up, he was astonished to see that it had utterly disappeared; and turning back to the figure, that it too had disappeared likewise.

The next morning, the hat was found close to the shaft-torn to sheds and quite useless.

The miner's plain speaking had had its effect apparently, because the spirit was never again seen at the mine.
