A Saucer of Milk for Small People at Hayle
Cornish Fairy Folktale

A K Hamilton Jenkin relates a story within twenty years of his writing, circa 1910 then, of a man living at Hayle who sets out a saucer of milk each night as fairy tribute for the small people. He says they only drink the astral part of the milk. Jenkin speculates that cats drink the rest, and that his friends cat did and got ill.

Within the last twenty years a certain man, living at Hayle, was in the habit of regularly putting out a saucer of milk for the small people before going to bed. The small people, he said, only drank the 'astral' part of the milk, whatever that might be. Apparently the cats drank the rest, and strangely enough one of them which belonged to a friend of the writer became very ill as the result of it.
